From the Past

I saw this photograph hanging on the wall in the lobby of Sycamore Place apartments, and I've seen it before, but I had some time to kill, and a blog entry to fill, so I photographed it, because there's a lot going on. (See the full picture at UrbanOhio.  It's number 24.)

Enhance.

This is gone.  That's a parking garage now, attached to what is now the AAA headquarters, on the right, at Central and Race.

Enhance.

The Power Building.  I think.  The water towers and signage are gone.

Enhance.

This is still there.

On Main Street, at 9th, looking south.

Looks to me like the Rugs sign was there first, and the Baking Co. was painted over it, but it still bled through.

Pay no attention to this man.

  1. The building on 817 Main St at 9th was the Kroger Grocery & Baking Co as early as February 1913. In 1938, it was the 2nd largest retail food organization in the United States, opening over 4,000 stores in about 1,500 cities and towns. In its infancy, Kroger delivered groceries to residents with Model T trucks instead of the horse drawn wagons.

Also in this building was the C & A Kreimer Furniture Co., a retail furniture, rugs, & upholstery store founded by German immigrant August H Kreimer in 1863. It also had factories at Richmond & Carr Streets.

    1. That explains the layered Bakery and Rugs. Thanks!
