Thanks to the News

In May of 2014, a tornado hit Sutton, Nebraska. As we were looking at photos of the damage, we noticed a ghost sign in the downtown.  So, during a quick holiday visit back to the area, we made an even quicker side trip to the community for the capture.

And we weren't disappointed.  We found a couple other ghost signs as well, including these two, on the same building.

And for good measure, the named buildings below.

Lost to Time

We'd been eyeballing this discolored patch on the south side of the Turret Lofts for a while now, and finally stopped for a closer look, when our Western Field Agent, Mr. D.L. Hudson was in town.

Definitely something there.
And on the north side of the building: this.

Park Here, But Not Here

Not technically ghost signs, but nonetheless cool.

And we would expect nothing less from Union Terminal, which I think sufficiently impressed Mr. D.L. Hudson during his recent visit.
There's another sign on the south side of the tunnel, but we forgot to get that one.
Next time.

Powell Valves

Powell Valves, although featured here before, is still in business.

We'd seen these before from the Western Hills Viaduct, but upon the urging of Mr. D.L. Hudson, drove around to capture them.

Here Today

While our Western Field Agent, Mr. D.L. Hudson was in the city, we walked through Over-the-Rhine to show him some of our best ghost signs.

On Race, he pointed this out, and asked why we hadn't featured it yet.

It's not that old.  It's not that grand.  But, it is ghost signage, and he persuaded us to capture it.

We're glad he did, because someday, it will be gone.  Like this:

Doesn't look familiar?  This is what was here before they paved it and put up a parking lot, just south of Findlay Market.
Yes. We lost another.

Again with the Sign Museum

Inside the American Sign Museum, there are curated signs.  Outside, the signs roam freely.

The Southern Ohio College was acquired by Brown Mackie.

Not even our Western Field Agent, D.L. Hudson, has been able to uncover facts about the Cincinnati Sampling Company.

Not our usual fare, but looks totally legitimate and safe.  Bring the kids.

Behind the Sign Museum

Our Western Field Office Agent, Mr. D.L. Hudson was in the City this weekend for some training, and to get his oil changed.  We ran into each other at the Sign Hunters ConFab at the American Sign Museum.  Nice fellow.
Anyway, we'd both already seen the Tatum and the Leon's signs, as shown above.

But, Mr. D.L. Hudson went a-wandering and found these, hidden further back.

Curtis Street

From a recent visit to Walnut Hills.

And across the street from the garage...

Let's zoom in a little.

Hard to see from this distance, but there's something there.
This entire block is about to be renovated, so it's probably not long for this world.
And this will probably go away too.

More Mailbox

This is in the alleyway behind the Aranoff Center.  We'd long suspected there was something there, but hadn't gotten around to looking.
We thank Mr. B. Joyce for doing it for us.

From the Mailbox

Another from Trinidad, CO, courtesy of Ms. L. Cicotello.

We've been promised another Colorado sign, from another Coloradoan, and hopefully, that will arrive soon.

Where is This From?

Good question!

Sent to us by Ms. L. Cicotello, during her recent drive through Trinidad, Colorado.

Warren Glass

Central Parkway, near Ezzard Charles.  We wondered why we hadn't noticed this sooner...

And when we stopped to take the pictures, a fella came out of the "Office Space for Lease" building, pictured below...

He'd just recently uncovered it, taking down the plywood that had hid this beauty.
He wasn't sure what the holes were for: either neon tubing, or a glass cover.

Across the street from yesterday's entry.  There's "5 cents" visible.

But it almost feels like one of those "if you don't look for it, you'll see it" puzzles.

The Big and Little Reveal

Work started a couple of weeks ago, removing a parking garage, at 7th and Sycamore.

And something we haven't.

Time For Friedman Furs and the Importance of Looking Up

Visualingual featured this recently too, and inspired me to go see it again, as it's a block away from home.

I'd seen both the sign by the back door, and the clock before, but for some reason forgot about both until she reminded me.

Cuppa Coffee

As the sun sets on our not-ghost-sign ghost signs,
we promise some brand new stuff next week.

And Pedal Wagon-free.

Can you guess where these "ghost signs" are?

Answer comes tomorrow.

Not Strictly Ghosting

After a brief hiatus, we're back.
And this week, we'll feature signs that are not ghosts, i.e. advertising companies still in business.

As they are keeping the artform alive.

Best of the Best: OTR Edition

We continue our look at which ghost signs we would preserve or protect, if someone asked.

And yes, we'd find a way to save the Davis Furniture building, and all of its glorious signage.
